Blake Coleman Trade From Flames Feels Imminent

The Calgary Flames are going to have some tough decisions to make before the trade deadline. While selling is the plan for Calgary, their decision to retain Rasmus Andersson and Jacob Markstrom leaves them with limited flexibility when dealing with some of their overpriced contracts. Craig Conroy would’ve liked to have the option for both Blake Coleman and Nazem Kadri, but contending teams will have to eat one of those two Flames forwards’ full salary in a trade.

Calgary isn’t in too big a rush to move its trade pieces. With the Olympic trade freeze happening this afternoon, fans shouldn’t expect any players to be moved before that deadline, according to Elliotte Friedman via Oilers Talk.

Friedman said on his hit with Bob Stauffer that he believes the Flames will trade Coleman after the Olympic break. The gritty forward wants to stay in Calgary, but he had to give the team a list of 10 teams he’d be willing to move to, and the organization was transparent with him that if any of those teams offer a deal, they’ll need to make it happen.

Blake Coleman‘s Trade Value for Flames

Coleman’s $4.9 million cap hit for the next two seasons will be the toughest thing for contending teams to accept. Most teams that are legitimate contenders are up against the salary cap, and the Flames might not be able to retain any of Coleman’s salary. It’s the one part that makes it extremely difficult for him to have much trade value.

Other than that, Coleman is an excellent piece for a championship-contending team. He already has a Stanley Cup from his time with the Tampa Bay Lightning, and is the type of bottom-six player that elevates his game in a playoff situation. Teams will want to figure out a way to get him on their roster.

It’ll take money in and money out for any team willing to acquire him, which isn’t easy if the player going out is valuable to the team. However, for a playoff-type player like Coleman, some team will believe it’s worth the risk.
