Blues’ Offer Sheet Heist of Broberg & Holloway Has Been Biggest Highlight of 2024-25 Season
Dylan Holloway, St. Louis Blues (Jess Starr/The Hockey Writers)

St. Louis Blues president and general manager Doug Armstrong pulled off his greatest heist yet with the acquisitions of Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway last summer. The Edmonton Oilers elected against matching the offer sheets sent through by the club. They added Broberg at two years and a salary cap hit of $4.58 million and Holloway came in at two years and $2.29 million.

The Blues would be nowhere near where they are now without the contributions of these two. They’re currently 35-28-7 and in a playoff spot after an electric overtime winner scored by Broberg to beat the Vancouver Canucks. Not only are they high-impact players right now, but they’re also both still so young. Let’s get into why the additions of two youngsters from the Oilers have been the biggest highlight of the season.

Broberg Can Be a Legitimate Top Pairing Defenseman

If Broberg isn’t a top-pair-level defenseman yet, that time is coming sooner rather than later. Standing at 6-foot-4 and 212 pounds, he’s got the size to do a lot of good things on the ice. His ice time has been steadily increasing with the absence of Colton Parayko and it should stay that way the rest of the season with how well he’s played overall. In the electrifying win over the Canucks, he played nearly 25 minutes of ice time before netting the overtime winner. Among his other numbers in this game were three shots on goal and three blocked shots.

In 57 games this season, Broberg has seven goals and 15 assists for 22 points to go along with a plus/minus of plus-13. He’s grown a lot after tallying just 11 points in 81 career regular-season games with the Oilers from 2021-22 to 2023-24. Some of that growth was on display during Edmonton’s run to the Stanley Cup Final last season. Overall, it’s no surprise to see this kind of growth from a talented player like Broberg and the Blues are benefitting from it in a major way.

Holloway Does Just About Everything Well

It’s hard to say enough good things about what Holloway has done in St. Louis this season. He has played well all season to earn his stripes among the best overall players on this roster. He has been one of the top breakout forwards in the entire league this season and there’s no denying that.

Similar to Broberg, the growth of Holloway could certainly be seen during the Oilers’ playoff run last season. He had five goals and was a plus-4 in 25 playoff games. It begs the question of why they didn’t match an offer sheet that carried a cap hit of less than $2.5 million, but the Oilers made a mistake there.

This season, Holloway has 23 goals and 33 assists for 56 points in 70 games while also carrying a plus-15. He’s been better than ever of late as well with nine points in the last five games. I’d also like to point out that he has just 10 penalty minutes this season. The discipline has been off the charts. He’s been a key cog in everything the Blues do and credit should also be given to head coach Jim Montgomery. Holloway has 48 points (19 goals) in 48 games since he took over the team and replaced Drew Bannister on Nov. 25. I can’t say enough good things about his game.

Blues Must Keep Them Long-Term

The stock for these two players has never been higher. Luckily, they’re locked up through next season, so the Blues will have to open the checkbooks when the time comes after the 2025-26 season. They’ll still be restricted free agents, so hopefully there isn’t another team that wants to offer sheet them.

The Blues are now in “make the playoffs” mode with how well they’ve played over the past month. The impact of these two can’t be denied and with that comes a lot of credit for Montgomery and the leadership in the locker room from captain Brayden Schenn and many others.
