Blues Pull Brandon Saad Ahead of Move to Beat NHL Trade Freeze

According to Sportsnet insider Elliotte Friedman, the St. Louis Blues are trying to trade veteran forward Brandon Saad. After adding Cam Fowler in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks on Saturday morning, the Blues aren’t finished trying to make moves.

The Blues made Saad a healthy scratch on Saturday night, likely in anticipation of making trade before the trade freeze on December 20th.

Friedman said:

“Saad is in the third year of his contract, he’s got one more year remaining at a $4.5 million AAV, and he’s a two-time Stanley Cup Champion. The Blues would like to move him. He’s got a no-trade clause, but I’m told he’s willing to consider other options.”

In his four seasons with St. Louis, Brandon Saad consistently produced around 40 points per year, including an impressive 26-goal campaign during the 2023-24 season. This season, however, his production has significantly declined, with just 10 points (four goals, six assists) in 27 games.

What Might the Blues Want Back in Trade?

The Blues are not currently retaining salary on any players, giving them the flexibility to retain a portion of Saad’s salary to help facilitate a trade if needed. However, it remains unclear what the Blues are seeking in return. They have recently added young pieces through offer sheets and also traded for a veteran defenseman, suggesting they are not following a single, defined strategy. Instead, it appears they may be targeting players they believe can make an immediate impact.

It sounds like the Blues also want to move Saad now, despite the fact his full no-trade turns into a 12-team no-trade on July 1. That suggests Saad is willing to work with the Blues to find a good fit.
