Boston Bruins Unexpectedly Make Multi-Million Dollar Decision With GM Don Sweeney

The Boston Bruins had to make a huge decision not to fire Don Sweeney after the 2024/25 season, and now, they've shockingly handed him an extension ahead of what will be a critical 2025 off-season.

The 2024/25 campaign was a highly disappointing one for the Boston Bruins, and after the team traded away Brad Marchand and some of their biggest names, questions were raised over their future.

Not only the future of the team, but General Manager Don Sweeney as well, as he was taking plenty of heat from the fanbase surrounding the team's lack of Stanley Cup Playoffs success during his tenure with the organizaiton.

Now however, the Bruins have tried to silence those doubters, as they have officially inked Sweeney to a two-year extension ahead of the summer, attempting to give the organization some stability ahead of free agency and the 2025 NHL Draft.

This comes on the heels of the news that Rick Tocchet, new Head Coach of the Flyers denied a meeting with the Bruins due to uncertainty around Sweeney's future (as well as the fear of him firing coaches very quickly), and in fear of free agents potentially thinking the same, the team moved quickly to lock him in to a new deal.

Since Sweeney took over the General Manager role back in 2015, the team have made it past the second round just once, losing in 2019's Stanley Cup Finals to the St. Louis Blues, and after some of the questionable trade returns he got at the 2025 trade deadline, it's safe to say that Sweeney will have to prove himself to Bruins fans before he gets all of their support moving forward.
