Bowness’ frustration with Blue Jackets’ effort is understandable

Columbus Blue Jackets head coach Rick Bowness didn’t hold back following the team’s 2-1 loss to the Washington Capitals Tuesday night.

“All you got to do is look at the stat sheet. Three hits, 23 giveaways,” Bowness said to reporters. “I don’t know if I’m back, but if I’m back, I’m changing this culture. These guys, they don’t care. Losing is not important enough to them. It doesn’t bother them.”

On Wednesday’s episode of Daily Faceoff LIVE, Tyler Yaremchuk and former NHL defenseman Colby Cohen discuss Bowness’ postgame comments and if he’ll be back with the group next season.

Colby Cohen: First off, let’s start with the passion that Rick Bowness does his job with, you saw it right there. It’s not necessarily in what he said, but he’s fighting tears because he understands what it means to work in the National Hockey League, what it means to be paid millions of dollars to be a professional and show up every single day.

This is a guy who has given his life to the game, and the game has given him a great life. I just think when I see this, and I think about the fact that, y’know, they didn’t get it done last year, either. They pushed, they pushed, but they collapsed.

For him, I think he has the cache to do it. I think that Don Waddell is an old school guy, and when you look at his history, it’s all OK for him to do what he did. I think you do run the risk of exit meetings where guys like Zach Werenski had quotes saying they didn’t agree with Bowness, and you do run the risk of going from a guy who all but had this job given to him to maybe we don’t know, because you might have a problem.

But, I think he means it. For a guy like Bowness, he’s going to do it his way, and if he’s going to go down, he’s going to go down swinging.
