Brad Marchand sparked a frenzy during the Panthers-Hurricanes game after cameras showed him eating with a spoon, leading many to believe he was enjoying a Dairy Queen Blizzard on the bench.
During Saturday night’s game between the Florida Panthers and Carolina Hurricanes, one unexpected moment grabbed more attention than the scoreboard.
As the Panthers cruised to a 6-2 win, Brad Marchand was shown on camera calmly eating something with a spoon during intermission.
Within minutes, social media was flooded with jokes and questions, most assuming Marchand had treated himself to a Dairy Queen Blizzard, possibly chocolate chip cookie dough.
Pressed about it after the game, Marchand didn’t miss the opportunity to lean in.
That’s exactly what it was,
he said, clearly joking.
But what started as a playful remark spiraled quickly.
The rumor gained so much traction that the former Bruins captain felt he needed to clear the air.
Speaking to The Athletic’s Michael Russo the next day, Marchand explained what really happened.
I was making a joke compared to our excursion from a couple nights before,
I think people took it seriously.
The amount of messages I got about people going to Dairy Queen (on Sunday), and I appreciate the support; I love a good Blizzard more than anybody, but it’s not something I’ve had in the middle of the game.
he said.
Turns out, Marchand wasn’t indulging in dessert.
He was actually fueling up, in a way that somehow fits his personality perfectly.
It was something healthy, It was honey. I was having honey.
It was a spoonful of honey. Because I’m a bear. I’ve always loved honey.
Actually, when I was growing up, I loved Winnie the Pooh, so I used to have a Winnie the Pooh bear and I would feed the bear honey.
he said.
Only Brad Marchand could turn a mid-game spoonful into a story this charming.
From his legendary on-ice pest behavior to this moment of unexpected sweetness, the veteran continues to show layers that surprise even longtime fans.
Marchand’s contract is up this offseason, and while NHL teams will certainly be lining up for his services, don’t be surprised if he draws attention from brands as well.
Whether it’s a honey company or Dairy Queen themselves, there’s marketing gold in moments like this.
Marchand’s ability to stir things up without even trying is part of what’s kept him in the spotlight for so long.
On Saturday, he didn’t need a big hit or a clutch goal, just a spoonful of mystery and a perfectly timed joke to remind everyone why he’s still one of hockey’s most compelling characters.
