Ottawa Senators head coach Travis Green held a media availability on Oct.16 and noted that he didn’t have an update on captain and star forward Brady Tkachuk. Green said, “he is still being evaluated.” He added, “I know it’s a hot topic here, it’s a hot topic in our room.”
Bruce Garrioch, who covers the team, reported, “Would expect an update on Brady Tkachuk today and would be more surprised if he doesn’t have surgery. League executives have told me the timeline is likely eight weeks if that’s the case.”
Tkachuk is going for a 2nd opinion on his injury. Senators owner Michael Andlauer said the team will know in the next 24 hours if he needs surgery.
On Monday, Tkachuk appeared to be injured after a cross-check from Predators defenseman Roman Josi sent him head-first into the boards, though he managed to protect himself with his hands. It’s not clear entirely when he hurt his hand (on the hit or the scrum afterward) but he was clearly laboring. He tried to return to the game, but couldn’t finish.
At Sens Talk notes, one thing that’s become abundantly clear for the Senators is that they need a physical presence beyond Brady Tkachuk. The roster’s lack of toughness is especially noticeable in situations like these.
