As the NHL goes on a small holiday break and analysts talk about what deals might be in the hopper as the roster freeze lifts, Kiefer Sherwood is quickly emerging as one of the more intriguing names on the trade market. There has been plenty of buzz about which teams might show interest in the Vancouver Canucks winger— and two more teams were added to the mix this week.
At 30 years old, Sherwood is producing at a level that will push him past 20 goals for the first time in his career. He’s got 16 goals in just 36 games, all while carrying a manageable $1.5 million cap hit. He’ll be heading toward unrestricted free agency in 2026, and the combination of his low salary and high production makes him valuable — and complicated.
According to The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun, the Dallas Stars are one team to watch closely. Dallas had already explored trading for Sherwood, but with Tyler Seguin sidelined long-term due to an ACL injury, their interest is likely to ramp up. The Stars are now thin up front and firmly in win-now mode.
The challenge? Assets. Dallas doesn’t own a first-round pick this June after moving it in the Mikko Rantanen deal. That’s where a younger piece like Mavrik Bourque could come into play, argues LeBrun. The 23-year-old forward hasn’t fully translated his AHL offense to the NHL yet. Still, Vancouver GM Patrik Allvin said the organization is actively looking for younger players as it continues reshaping its roster around Quinn Hughes.
Chris Johnston believes the Boston Bruins are the other logical suitor. Sherwood checks every traditional Bruins box: size, speed, and relentless forechecking. Boston is rebuilding on the fly after last season’s reset and has already had trade discussions with Vancouver dating back to the summer.
The biggest obstacle there is price. The Canucks aren’t eager to move Sherwood as a rental, and the Bruins aren’t expected to chase short-term help unless it comes with cost certainty. That’s where a potential extension could bridge the gap — something Sherwood is reportedly open to.
Whether it’s Dallas chasing a playoff push or Boston betting on fit and term, Vancouver holds a valuable chip — and leverage. This is the kind of trade the team wants to get right.
