The Boston Bruins’ early-season momentum nearly came to a halt Thursday when defenseman Hampus Lindholm left the game against the Chicago Blackhawks with a lower-body injury.
The 31-year-old exited midway through the first period and did not return, although it's unclear when the injury happened.
Lindholm’s absence immediately raised concerns, given that he only played 17 games last season and missed the rest with a fractured kneecap that required multiple surgeries.
After Boston’s 4–3 overtime win, head coach Marco Sturm provided a reassuring update on the defenseman's status.
“Just a minor injury, not related to his old injury,” Sturm said. “We just want to make sure he’ll be OK. He’s going to get tested on Friday and then we’ll see.”

The Bruins’ staff leaned on Nikita Zadorov and Mason Lohrei to fill Lindholm’s minutes, while fellow alternate captain Charlie McAvoy logged over 27 minutes on the back end.
Boston, which is off Friday, will re-evaluate Lindholm ahead of Saturday’s home matchup with Buffalo, although it's fair to assume the franchise will take as much time as possible to fully evaluate his status and play a cautious game given Lindholm's recent injury history.
Sturm made that clear, acknowledging the team intends to be cautious with one of its most important players.
“I think with any of our big guys, we just have to make sure we’re going to be smart,” Sturm said. “We need him for the long run. But it sounds like it’s not too bad.”
Given Sturm's update, Lindholm’s injury could be considered day-to-day, and it's now clear it's unrelated to last season’s knee issue, which was the main concern as he left the ice on Thursday.
The Swedish defenseman has yet to score a single point this season through two games played, with his next chance to appear in a match coming on Saturday as the Bruins take on the Sabres at 7 p.m. ET.
