The Boston Bruins placed veteran forward Tyler Johnson on unconditional waivers with the intent to terminate his contract, as reported by Chris Johnston on Thursday.
If Johnson clears waivers on Friday, he will become an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any NHL team or explore opportunities overseas.
Johnson, 34, joined the Bruins on a professional tryout during training camp but didn’t make the opening-night roster due to salary cap constraints.
He decided to wait instead of signing elsewhere waiting for the Bruins to clear cap space, and Johnson ended up signing a one-year deal in early November, with a prorated cap hit of $775,000.
Since then, Johnson appeared in just nine games, tallying two assists, including a helper in a 2–1 loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins on Nov. 29, and posting a minus-1 plus/minus in 117:42 total minutes of playing time.
A two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Tampa Bay Lightning, Johnson carved out an impressive NHL career over 13 seasons.
Across 747 regular-season games, Johnson has scored 193 goals and 240 assists for 433 points, along with 65 points in 116 playoff games.
His time with the Bruins marks the third team in his career, following nine years with the Lightning and three seasons with the Chicago Blackhawks.
Boston currently holds fourth place with a 17-13-4 record in the Atlantic Division, trailing the Florida Panthers and Toronto Maple Leafs by four points and tied at 38 points with the Lightning.
