The 2020-21 NHL season is still very fresh, but over the past decade the Boston Bruins are not used to being out of a playoff spot – ever. However, heading into today’s action, that is exactly the Bruins predicament. That said, they are only two points back of the East division leading Philadelphia Flyers so any cause for concern would be totally overblown. My point here is that more help is on the way!

Triumphant Return

After receiving offseason hip surgery, David Pastrňák is now within days of making his return to the Bruins lineup. The 24-year-old Czech winger led the team in scoring last season with 48 goals and 47 assists over 70 games. Although neither player likely care, this was the first time he had surpassed line mate Brad Marchand for the team scoring lead.

Marchand also had offseason surgery to remedy a sports hernia that had been pestering him for some time. However, he was able to return for the season opener and has accumulated a goal and three assists during the Bruins first four games. Those numbers should only improve when he and Patrice Bergeron get the third part of the line back – Pastrňák.

Top Trio

Over the past several seasons there is a legitimate argument that the three Bruins forwards collectively create the best line in the league. An extremely reliable and intelligent 200-foot pivot in Bergeron. A feisty agitator that has not had less than 85 points over the last four seasons – Marchand. Lastly, a youthful Pastrňák who seemingly only gets better each season. Pretty solid trio that compliment one another extremely well.

The original timetable for Pastrňák’s return was scheduled for mid-February. However, Bruins head coach Bruce Cassidy recently indicated to NHL.com staff writer Amalie Benjamin that by “next week he joins us and then see how close he is to game-ready.” That would put the young winger ahead of schedule by approximately three weeks.

Although the team has done relatively well so far, the highly anticipated return of their star winger should provide an instant boost for the Bruins offence. Feel free to get excited Bruins fans!
