The Bruins have taken care of one of their restricted free agents rather quickly. The team announced that they’ve re-signed goaltender Luke Cavallin to a one-year, two-way contract. The deal will pay $850K in the NHL while PuckPedia reports (Twitter link) the AHL portion is worth $80K.
The 25-year-old took a while to secure an NHL contract. After going undrafted out of the OHL, he spent two years in Toronto’s minor league system before moving to Montreal’s farm teams in 2024-25. With them, he put up a sterling performance in the ECHL, including their Kelly Cup playoff run where he had a 1.53 GAA and a .948 SV% in 20 games, earning playoff MVP honors in the process.
That allowed Cavallin to secure his first NHL deal last summer, inking a one-year, entry-level deal with Boston. Last season, he played in eight games with AHL Providence, posting a 2.47 GAA and a .910 SV%. But most of his time was spent in the ECHL with Maine where he compiled a 2.35 GAA and a .917 SV% in 34 contests.
Cavallin will be waiver-exempt again this season and will once again be battling for ice time in a crowded crease in Providence. Michael DiPietro (pending waiver clearance) is set to return as the starter as things stand while Simon Zajicek is also back. Meanwhile, Max Lundgren is also set for his first professional campaign and will be pushing for ice time as well.
