Brunet Could Be Bruins’ Next Breakout Defender

He played in one game with the Bruins during the 2024-25 season and skated in just 14:23 of ice time. He attempted four shots, two of which were on net in that game. He blocked five shots, laid out a hit and had one takeaway with no turnovers. It was an efficient game for the then-21-year-old who started 60% of his limited shifts in the defensive zone.

Newly-named Providence Bruins head coach Trent Whitfield offered glowing praise for the 22-year-old.

“Freddy Brunet’s come a long way from year one to now. Last year took huge strides. He was probably our best defenseman from day one right through the end of the season. He put some offense in his game; he put the work in away from the rink, he came in after every summer faster, stronger, more prepared than he was the year before. He’s well on his way; now he just needs a little bit of runway in Boston to get his feet wet. He doesn’t have any NHL experience yet, so he’s gonna have to learn that level, but he’s ready to go, mentally, physically, his skillset; he’s an NHL player. He moves really well around the ice; real excited for Freddy over the next few years and where he’s going.”

The last part of Whitfield’s remarks is interesting. Though he’s noted that Brunet is already NHL-ready, there isn’t a definitive path for him to make the NHL roster based on its current construction. Still, if the Bruins are looking to improve their team and build a strong pipeline to tap into when NHL-calibre players arise, they’ll need to actually capitalize on the opportunities when they present themselves. Brunet will have as good a chance as any to make the roster out of training camp and the preseason; he’ll just need to keep working hard and show that his development has taken him from AHL defender to NHL player.
