Buffalo Sabres’ Jordan Greenway to miss Tuesday’s game vs. Capitals with upper-body injury

Greenway, 27, played all of Saturday’s 3-0 loss to the Toronto Maple Leafs up until he was handed a misconduct in the final minute of the game, so it’s unclear as to what exactly caused the injury. That said, it’s quite likely it occurred during that fight in the final minute. Granato mentioned that Greenway will be shut down for a few days and be reevaluated after that, so that doesn’t necessarily rule him out for Friday’s game against the Philadelphia Flyers.

Greenway has certainly bounced back from his struggles last season, as he has improved to his usual production with 9 goals and 15 assists for 24 points in 62 games this season. Assuming his injury doesn’t keep him out of the lineup beyond Tuesday’s game, he’d need a very productive final six games to hit his current career-high of 32 points achieved in the 2020-21 season.

Greenway was a second-round pick of the Minnesota Wild in the 2015 NHL Draft, and after three years of college with Boston University, he made his NHL debut in 2018. He then spent parts of six seasons with the Wild before he was dealt to the Sabres at the 2023 trade deadline, where he’s now spent the past year.

Greenway is currently in the second year of a three-year contract with a $3 million cap hit, one he signed as an extension with the Wild in the 2022 offseason as a restricted free agent.

Granato also mentioned that both Lukas Rousek and Tim Robinson will return to the lineup on Tuesday in the place of the injured Greenway, with Tyson Jost being the other odd man out of the lineup.

The Sabres currently sit in sixth in the Atlantic Division with a 35-35-5 record, which is seven points behind the Capitals for the final wild card spot in the Eastern Conference. Buffalo will look to bounce back from their loss to  the Leafs and try to salvage whatever remains of their playoff chances when they host those same Capitals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. EST.
