Calgary Flames’ 2025 NHL draft first-round pick projection: Six games remaining
Brett Holmes-Imagn Images

Less than two weeks remain in the 2024–25 regular season. With the Calgary Flames holding the Florida Panthers and New Jersey Devils first-round picks, there’s more to keep an eye on standings-wise for Flames fans than the hunt for a wild card spot. Let’s look at where the Calgary Flames’ first-round picks land with six games left on the schedule.

Recent stretch of games

The Flames played four games this past week, starting off in Colorado on Monday. It was another third period comeback and eventual victory for Calgary, with Yegor Sharangovich as the lone scorer in the shootout.

Shortly after the 3–2 victory, the Flames headed to Utah to face off against the Hockey Club in their last back-to-back of the year. Luck was once again not on the Flames’ side, as they had yet another goal disallowed upon video review, their third in a week at that point. Despite a hard-fought effort and playoff intensity, the team fell short, losing in regulation 3–1.

Calgary headed back home to host the Anaheim Ducks on Thursday, desperate for a victory. The team looked ready to play, with Nazem Kadri opening the scoring 16 seconds into the game. Kevin Rooney potted his fifth of the year, while Blake Coleman scored a pair to reach 15 on the season in the 4–1 victory.

Finally, on Saturday night, the Flames hosted the Vegas Golden Knights. Entering the game, the Flames were scoreless through six periods against Vegas. Despite breaking their goose egg and putting two on the board, the Flames’ back luck continued with the OT winner bouncing past Dustin Wolf off Mackenzie Weegar’s skate.

In a pivotal week, the Flames went 2–1–1, securing three of a possible six points. Meanwhile, the St. Louis Blues extended their winning streak to a franchise-record 12 wins and are far out of reach at this point. The Blues are now two points ahead of the Minnesota Wild for the top wild card spot with 91 points. The Flames trail Minnesota by six points with two games in hand and a head-to-head matchup this week. It all could come down to this week unless the Flames can pull off a near-perfect record.

The first-rounders the Flames own

With the Flames committed to a playoff hunt and thus out of draft lottery contention, their own first-rounder will be headed to the Montreal Canadiens. Calgary currently holds three 2025 first-round picks:

  • Their own pick, which would be 16th overall if the season ended today.
  • The Florida Panthers’ pick, which would be 22nd overall if the season ended today.
  • The New Jersey Devils’ pick, which would be 18th overall if the season ended today (but will defer to 2026 if the Devils finish bottom 10).

As part of the conditions in the Sean Monahan trade with the Montreal Canadiens, the better of Florida or Calgary’s picks will be transferred to the Canadiens if the Flames finish outside the bottom 10. Currently, the Canadiens would receive the 16th overall pick.

There's not much change to report in this week's update on the 2025 draft picks! #Flames

Current NHL standings

The Flames will need at least four wins in their final six games to surpass the Wild for the final wild card spot. With four games this week, the season could be decided before next week’s edition.

It all starts in San Jose against the Sharks before heading the Anaheim to take on the Ducks for the final time this season. After their short California road trip, the Flames return to Calgary to host Minnesota in what will inevitably be the most important game of the regular season for each team. On Sunday, the Flames wrap up the week by hosting the Sharks.

With the Flames eight points ahead of the Columbus Blue Jackets for the final top 10 lottery position, it’s almost certain Montreal will hold the Flames first-round pick in the upcoming draft.

The state of Calgary’s other picks

The Devils only played a pair of games this week, taking a shootout victory against the Wild Monday before a four-day break. The rest paid off as New Jersey beat the New York Rangers handedly 4–0 Saturday.

Despite only playing twice, the Devils didn’t move at all in the league standings this week.

The Florida Panthers continue to slide, however. The Panthers gained only a single point over the course of four games this week. To make matters worse, all four losses came against divisional opponents. With Ottawa’s victory Sunday and the Panthers’ loss against Detroit, the Senators are now only two points shy of the Panthers for third in the Atlantic division.

If the season ended this way, the Flames would give Montreal their own pick and retain Florida’s, selecting six spots lower. Instead of having their own pick at 16th overall, they would have Florida’s 22nd overall pick as well as New Jersey’s 18th overall pick.

Uncomfortably familiar

As far as draft picks are concerned, the Flames will have two in the first round this upcoming draft. This past week sealed the Flames’ lottery chances, and it seems their playoff hopes could be destined for the same fate. It’s a space that Flames fans are all too familiar with, just a bit outside.

With six points separating them from a playoff birth and only six games remaining, it’s almost time to wave the white flag. This week—especially the game against Minnesota—will determine the Flames’ playoff fate.

As far as the picks go, just trust Craig Conroy and the scouting team will make the right call. If this week has shown us anything, it’s that the Flames’ prospect pool is on the up and up, with Aydar Suniev and Zayne Parekh both looking to potentially play their first NHL games before April 17.
