Calgary Flames headed to Young Stars Classic tournament Sept 13-16 in Penticton
Sergei Belski-USA TODAY Sports

A fun annual tradition is returning to kick off the 2024-25 hockey year. The Young Stars Classic tournament in Penticton, B.C. will return this year from Sept. 13-16, with the Calgary Flames set to take part.

They’ll join the host Vancouver Canucks, Winnipeg Jets and Edmonton Oilers in the event. The game schedule has yet to be announced, but it’ll be a round robin affair with the Flames’ prospects playing a game apiece against the top youngsters from Vancouver, Winnipeg and Edmonton.

Based on the tournament dates, you can expect the Flames to begin prospect camp around Thursday, Sept. 12 before heading to Penticton, and main camp will likely begin around Thursday, Sept. 19. The Young Stars Classic serves as a showcase for players in prospect camp, which traditionally includes players in the first couple years of their entry-level deals, along with unsigned drafted prospects from Canadian major junior and a smattering of invited try-out players. Collegiate and European prospects typically don’t attend the event.

For the curious, here’s the roster the Flames sent to Penticton a year ago:

  • Goaltenders Jari Kykkonen (try-out), Connor Murphy (AHL deal) and Matt Radomsky (AHL deal)
  • Defencemen Charles Cote (try-out), Mikael Diotte (try-out), Tyson Galloway (try-out), Jarrod Gourley (AHL deal), Yan Kuznetsov, Quinn Mantei (try-out), Donovan McCoy (try-out), Etienne Morin and Jeremie Poirier
  • Forwards Parker Bell, Lucas Ciona, Matt Coronato, Mark Duarte (AHL deal), Samuel Honzek, Rory Kerins, Adam Klapka, Jaden Lipinski, Ilya Nikolaev, Oliver Peer (try-out), Nathan Pilling (try-out), William Stromgren and Oliver Tulk (try-out)

It was a pretty youthful group.

We’ll have roster and schedule information for the tournament available in September.
