Calgary Flames Set to Inevitably' Trade Top Defenseman

After 9 years with the Calgary Flames, all indications point toward general manager Craig Conroy trading him out of town per Flames insider Eric Francis.

Calgary Flames defenseman Rasmus Andersson is set to enter the final year of his current deal that expires in 2026, but it doesn't sound as though he'll get the chance to play out that final year with the Flames.

Per Flames insider Eric Francis, Calgary general manager Craig Conroy is set to trade Andersson:

Late last month, reports surfaced that Andersson's camp and Conroy are millions apart in new contract negotiations.

After their season came to a close having just fallen short of getting back to the Stanley Cup Playoffs for the 1st time since 2022, Andersson sounded anything but sure that he would be back with the Flames in the fall.

I want to be honest, but I don't know what's going to happen. But I hope the fans know that I loved every second of it, and I've never taken it for granted.

There's a lot of good young players in the organization, and, you know, there's only a certain amount of right-shot defencemen you can have on the team.
I wish I could say, 'hey, yeah, I'm signing July 1,' or 'I'm getting traded July 1,' but I can't at the moment. I just don't know.

Andersson, who was taken with the 15th overall pick in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft by the Flames, has spent his entire career playing in Calgary.

He had 31 points (11G, 20A) in 81 games.
