The past few NHL Drafts have been incredibly successful for the Calgary Flames, and with players like Zayne Parekh, Matvei Gridin and others starting to make their NHL mark, the future begins to look brighter and brighter.
However, the team has struggled immensely through three games, with just three goals scored as they've been decimated by Vancouver and Seattle, with many believing this could be a historicly poor team.
So, if there's Flames fans looking for positives, let's take a look at the prospect pool, as we breakdown how the season has begun for some of the top names that will define the future of this organization.
Europe has always been a great source of prospects for the Flames, with Matvei Gridin the latest example of a player that could be a huge piece of the future out of Europe. This year, there's only a few prospecst out there, and while the 2027 NHL Draft could see more join the organization, for now there's plenty of excitement out there.
Sweden
In Sweden is perhaps the Flames most overlooked prospect in Theo Stockselius, and while he's yet to make his true mark at the SHL level, given his size and his skill, he's still on to watch for the future. The production isn't there yet, but with the World Juniors upcoming, it's only a matter of time until Stockselius finds his role and starts breaking out at the next level.
Theo Stockselius (Djurgardens): 0G, 1A, 1P, -1 in six games played.
Russia
Out of every Flames prospect early this season, none have caught the attention of the hockey world quite like second-round pick Alan Shaikhlislamov, who has dominated early in the season at the Russian junior level. He only recently turned 18, so it will be some time until we see him, but given the Flames belief in his shot and his physicality, he's already proving to be quite the handful.
Alan Shaikhlislamov (Tolpar): 7G, 5A, 12P, -2 in nine games played.
Yan Matveiko (Total between MHL and VHL): 0G, 3A, 3P, -2 in 10 games played.
While the NCAA is where the Flames top prospects are, the CHL is where the majority of them are, and given that one of the Flames biggest strength is their depth of prospects, rather than overall quality, there's plenty of names to keep an eye on.
OHL
The only Flames prospect in Ontario this season is former fifth-round pick Simon Katolicky, and while he's not been dominant, he's settling in well in his first season in North America with the Sarnia Sting. It's unclear how high the potential is for Katolicky, but his start has been positive, and if the team could find anything in him, it would be a major positive.
Katolicky (Sarnia): 2G, 1A, 3P, +2 in seven games played.
WHL
The WHL has been a great source of talent for the Calgary Flames under Craig Conroy, and whether it be players with famous last names, a potential future star power forward and others, that talent is showing off early in the year.
Chase Harrington (Spokane): 3G, 4A, 7P, +7 in four games played.
Joe Iginla (Vancouver): 1G, 2A, 3P, -3 in five games played.
Mace'o Phillips (Medicine Hat): 1G, 2A, 3P, +8 in five games played.
Jakob Leander (Calgary): 0G, 2A, 2P, +2 in five games played.
Bode Laylin (Everett): 0G, 1A, 1P, +2 in five games played.
The NCAA is where most of the Flames top prospects will play, and while the likes of Carson Carels and Cole Reschny have impressed early, they've only played exhibition games to date, and will begin their season officially later this week. However, several names have gotten their season going, and unsurprisingly, the standout of all of them is Quinnipiac's Ethan Wyttenbach, who looks to build on his NCAA leading campaign of 2025/26.
Ethan Wyttenbach (Quinnipiac): 2G, 2A, 4P, +2 in two games played.
Henry Mews (Michigan): 0G, 2A, 2P, +0 in two games played.
Egor Barabanov (UMass): 1G, 0A, 1P, +0 in two games played.
Cade Littler (Arizona): 0G, 1A, 1P, -4 in two games played.
Through their start to the year, Max Curran, Eric Jameison and Jaden Lipinski are all scoreless, but in the next week, they're all hoping to settle in and get going, as they could have potential roles to play in the AHL or even NHL one day.
For Flames fans, the American Hockey League is the easiest way to keep tabs with some fans, as the Calgary Wranglers play at the Saddledome as well, and after two games, they've put together a 2-0 record with back-to-back wins over the Abbotsford Canucks. There are just a few notable Flames prospects down in the AHL this season, and whils some have stood out, others, on the verge of a full-time NHL push haven't quite produced as well through two games.
The two biggest standouts in that time have been Axel Hurtig (2G, 0A, 2P, +2) and Jonathan Castagna (2G, 0A, 2P, +3), both of whom have both the skill and the physical tools to be difference makers at the next level. Beyond that, both Hunter Brzustewicz and Aydar Suniev have a point each in the early goings of the season, and with another big series coming up this weekend, there's more opportunity to get settled.
In net, both Kirill Zarubin and Arsenii Sergeev played one game each and both did well, each allowing just two goals as the Wranglers won both matchups 4-2, with the Flames future in net looking very bright indeed.
