On Wednesday, the Montreal Canadiens announced that they are loaning forward Oliver Kapanen to Timrå IK of the Swedish Hockey League.

The team also revealed that it is recalling forward Lucas Condotta from its American Hockey League, the Laval Rocket.

This is Kapanen’s first pro season in North America. So far, he has appeared in 12 of the Habs’ 13 games, registering his first NHL as an assist in his NHL debut against the Boston Bruins on Oct. 10. He also posted a helper in Montreal’s overtime loss to the Calgary Flames on Tuesday night. Kapanen has averaged 11:38 of ice with a plus/minus of -4.

The 21-year-old had some notable expectations heading into his rookie season. The Canadiens took him in the second round, 64th overall, of the 2021 NHL Draft. He built a reputation as an exceptional scoring threat with Kalpa in Liiga in his native Finland. Kapanen signed a three-year, entry-level contract to come to Montreal this past June.

However, things haven’t quite paid off right away for Kapanen. While he played around 12-13 minutes per game through his first 11 appearances, the Swedish-born center played less than eight minutes against Calgary. The decision to loan him back overseas is for the opportunity to consistently play big minutes and develop into the asset the Canadiens brass expect him to be.

Timra (8-8) currently sits eighth in the SHL standings. They are next scheduled to play on Nov. 14 against HV71.

Condotta, the Rocket’s captain, has spent the first month of the season solely in the AHL. With Laval, he has posted four assists in nine games. The 27-year-old, who has spent his entire career in the Montreal system, played just three games for the Habs last season. In four career NHL appearances, Condotta has scored one goal, that coming in his NHL debut during the 2022-23 season.

The Canadiens (4-7-2) are at the bottom of the Atlantic Division in points (10) and winning percentage (.385). They are scheduled to face the New Jersey Devils in Newark on Thursday night.

NHL Analyst Urges Maple Leafs to Fill Mitch Marner’s Spot with Familiar Face

The Toronto Maple Leafs are heading into training camp with a glaring vacancy on their first line after the departure of Mitch Marner, who was traded to the Vegas Golden Knights and signed an eight-year, $96 million contract. Marner’s exit not only ended the Leafs’ “Core Four” era but also left the club without a proven 100-point winger to deploy on the first forward line alongside center Auston Matthews and right winger Matthew Knies. TSN analyst Mark Masters said during FanDuel’s "OverDrive" that the answer may already be on the roster and involve a familiar face. Masters urged the Leafs to give Max Domi the first crack at Marner’s spot, citing previous success with Matthews when they have shared the ice in past seasons. “Marner played every game but one last year, the one game he missed, I think, it was Max Domi who filled in there beside Auston Matthews, and obviously, they’ve had a good track record in the past playing together,” Masters said. Mark Masters Wants Max Domi to Take Mitch Marner's Role Masters noted that coach Craig Berube typically uses Matthews’ line against opponents’ top players, a role requiring experience. That, in Masters' eyes, makes Domi a natural fit to step in. “Domi did not have a great season last year, but I like the idea of engaging him right away and saying, ‘Hey, big opportunity, let’s hit the ground running here,’” Masters said. “The question, of course, is (that) the Matthews line is likely to get the tough matchups. That’s what Craig Berube likes to do, and that’s a big reason why William Nylander did not get any sort of sustained look on that spot. "I like the idea of Max Domi there.” Domi first signed a one-year, prove-it deal with the Maple Leafs before the 2023-24 season. After scoring 47 points in 80 regular-season games, Domi signed a four-year, $15 million contract extension in June 2024 to remain with the Leafs through July 2028. He's coming off a 33-point season. Maple Leafs' Matthew Knies Highlights His Preferred Option Outside of Domi, the Leafs could opt to deploy other players in the first-line right wing role, including Nicholas Robertson or any of the offseason additions in Nicolas Roy, Matias Maccelli, and Dakota Joshua. Knies, who already played on the Leafs' top line last season but is expected to grow into an even larger role after signing a six-year, $46.5 million extension, pointed to Nylander as the best option to fill Marner's void. “Willy is pretty dynamic,” Knies said. “(Moving Nylander to the first-line gap) wouldn’t be a bad thing at all.

Recent roster moves cement 2022 QB class as one of worst ever

Finding a starting quarterback in the NFL is hard work, and most players who get picked at the position will not pan out as hoped. Teams that took quarterbacks in the 2022 NFL Draft have found that out first hand, and some recent roster moves around the league have helped to cement that class as one of the worst ever for quarterbacks. Of the nine quarterbacks taken in that class, only one of them — Brock Purdy with the San Francisco 49ers — is a starter in the NFL, and he is the only one out of that group who is still with the team that selected them. Here is a quick run down of where the first eight quarterbacks in that class are right now, including some recent roster moves featuring the top-two quarterbacks — Kenny Pickett and Desmond Ridder — taken in that class. Kenny Pickett (No. 20 overall, Pittsburgh Steelers) Pickett was just traded by the Cleveland Browns to the Las Vegas Raiders and is now already on his fourth team in the NFL, having been traded three times. He has a Super Bowl ring and should have a nice career as a backup, but as the first quarterback taken in a class, this is a disappointing career path so far. Desmond Ridder (No. 74 overall, Atlanta Falcons) Like Pickett, Ridder has also already played for four teams in the NFL and will have to join a fifth to continue his career after being released by the Cincinnati Bengals on Tuesday. He was originally picked by the Atlanta Falcons and has played for the Arizona Cardinals, Raiders and Bengals. Malik Willis (No. 86 overall, Tennessee Titans) After failing to secure the starting job with the Titans, Willis is now a backup with the Green Bay Packers. Matt Corral (No. 94 overall, Carolina Panthers) Corral never threw a pass in the NFL and is no longer in the league, having most recently played for the Birmingham Stallions of the UFL. Bailey Zappe (No. 137 overall, New England Patriots) Zappe had a brief run as a starter with the Patriots, but he never solidified the job and has spent time as a backup with the Cleveland Browns and Kansas City Chiefs. Sam Howell (No. 144 overall, Washington Commanders) Howell showed some potential as a starter for Washington during the 2023 season, throwing for 3,946 yards and 21 touchdowns. The downside: He also threw a league-leading 21 interceptions. After being traded to the Philadelphia Eagles this preseason, he is now on his third team. Chris Oladokun (No. 241 overall, Pittsburgh Steelers) Oladokun was the second of the Steelers' two quarterback picks in this class and never even made the roster. He was cut after the initial training camp and ended up as a depth piece in Kansas City. Skylar Thompson (No. 247 overall, Miami Dolphins) Thompson was forced into a starting role for a playoff game for the Dolphins but never really established himself as a long-term option. He was in training camp with the Steelers this season and played well, but is likely to lose out on a numbers game and be seeking a third team. Of these eight quarterbacks, four have already played for at least three teams before the end of their rookie contracts. Purdy, who was oddly enough the last quarterback taken in this class, is the only one who has found success. But even he is not good enough to salvage what has been a complete dud of a quarterback class.

Former GM blasts Giants for not embracing 'best chance to win'

Ever since the opening night of the 2025 NFL Draft, New York Giants head coach Brian Daboll has repeatedly said that veteran quarterback Russell Wilson will start over rookie Jaxson Dart for the club's regular-season opener at the Washington Commanders on Sept. 7. However, former NFL general manager and current ESPN personality Mike Tannenbaum made it known during a Tuesday appearance on "SportsCenter" that he thinks the Giants are making a mistake following the team's three preseason victories. "Jaxson Dart, how soon does he start? If it was up to me, it would have been three months ago," Tannenbaum said during the segment, per Adam Zagoria of NJ Advance Media. "He has outplayed Russell Wilson. He is the best quarterback on the New York Giants. Every game he doesn’t start is, to me, not giving them the best chance to win. He has played with energy. He’s played with enthusiasm. Knows what to do. I think he should start." For an article published on Monday, Chris Trapasso of CBS Sports gave Dart an "A+" grade for the rookie's three preseason performances and said that the 22-year-old "perfectly blended quick decision-making with an occasional dime down the field and added a sprinkle of his athleticism as a scrambler in all three contests." According to Fox Sports, Dart completed 32-of-47 passes for 372 yards with three touchdowns and zero interceptions over his three August appearances. He also contributed six carries for 52 yards and an additional score. To compare, Wilson connected on 10-of-14 pass attempts for 136 yards and an interception. That said, such stats are largely meaningless since Wilson and Dart were never competing for the starting job. Following the Giants' preseason finale versus the New England Patriots last week, Dart acknowledged that "Russ is the starter" and "has completely earned that role." Meanwhile, multiple stories shared throughout the summer have touched upon how Wilson has established himself as "a vocal leader in the meeting room and on the practice field" with the Giants. In time, Dart may receive opportunities to show that he gives the 2025 Giants "the best chance to win" meaningful games. Unless Wilson produces a nightmare performance at Washington's Northwest Stadium, he should remain atop the Big Blue depth chart through at least the start of the Giants' Week 2 game at the Dallas Cowboys on Sept. 14.

Miami Dolphins' Mike McDaniel confirms suspicion regarding former Tennessee Vols standout Jaylen Wright as preseason comes to a conclusion

Current Miami Dolphins running back and former Tennessee Vols standout Jaylen Wright hasn't had the best month of August thus far. A pedestrian performance in the preseason compared to a strong one from Oklahoma State rookie Ollie Gordon II has some on social media calling for the latter to take over as the team's primary backup to starter De'Von Achane. Things took a turn for the worse this past week for Wright during joint practices with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Wright hobbled off the field with an apparent leg injury and didn't return. It was also enough to keep him on the sideline of the Dolphins' 14-6 win over the Jaguars on Saturday night in the team's final preseason game. Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked after the game about Wright's status, and he said Wright is "week to week". Wright's injury appeared to be more than just a very minor tweak or something a player can shake off and keep practicing, as Miami Dolphins beat writer Omar Kelly noted that it "doesn't look good" when he was leaving the field on Thursday. A week-to-week prognosis could be an injured reserve situation to start the season, which we'll know soon enough, as the Dolphins have to cut their roster down to 53 players by Tuesday at 4:00 pm ET. If Wright heads to injured reserve, a decision will have to be made by then. It's an unfortunate update on a player who could have used some momentum at the end of the preseason heading to the start of the regular season. Now, it appears possible he might not even be in uniform for that.
