The Montreal Canadiens are entering a pivotal stretch in their roster retooling after making the playoffs last season with one of the youngest rosters in the NHL.
Montreal’s defense corps has grown crowded, and management appears ready to create room for players they view as part of the team’s long-term future.
According to NHL insider Eric Engels, the team has placed several defensemen, including Arber Xhekaj, on the trade block as they prepare to integrate top prospects David Reinbacher and Adam Engstrom into the NHL lineup.
Speaking on "The Sick Podcast" on Tuesday, Engels said that he believes the Canadiens are prepared to move at least one blueliner shortly.

"Between those three guys—(Mike) Matheson, (Jayden) Struble, and Xhekaj—there's a good chance that between now and this time next year, one of those guys is not here," Engels said.
The key reason behind that shift is the development of Reinbacher and Engstrom, two high-upside young defensemen pushing for NHL roles.
“We know David Reinbacher is a big part of the future for the Canadiens,” Engels said. “They're obviously going to look to get him some. They're not just going to force him into the NHL lineup when they don't have to."
"You look at Adam Engstrom, another player who has potential real value to the Canadiens. He's going to be knocking on the door. He's so skilled. He's so silky."
Reinbacher, the Canadiens’ 2023 first-round pick, is expected to make a push for NHL minutes this season. Engstrom was drafted a year earlier during the third round of the 2022 NHL draft.
The Canadiens have solid internal options and depth if injuries impact their roster next season. That said, competition for roster spots and playing time will be strong, assuming everybody remains healthy.
That depth, while a positive for development, may push the organization toward trades to make room for up-and-coming players, and also to give the Canadiens room to address needs elsewhere on the roster.
Xhekaj, who appeared in 44 games last season, has drawn interest around the league for his physical presence and potential upside, and is a likely candidate to get moved during the next few months
