Canadiens Prioritize Next Blue Line Signing After Lane Hutson Deal

The Montreal Canadiens are clearly focusing much of the attention to their blue line this season. Following a trade for Noah Dobson in the summer, the organization signed Lane Hutson to a massive eight-year extension. Now, reports are that they have shifted to prioritizing an extension with veteran defenseman Mike Matheson.

TSN’s Pierre LeBrun reports that the 31-year-old blueliner, who will be a free agent next July, and his agent are open to discussions about a new contract with Montreal.

The main hurdle appears to be the term. At the age of 31, Matheson isn’t interested in a short-term deal. Not surprisingly, LeBrun suggests a four- or five-year contract could be the “sweet spot.” That would likely take him to the end of his NHL career, and security for the blueliner is key.

The annual average value (AAV) will also play a role, with potential figures in the $6.5–$7 million range, up from his current $4.875 million AAV.

Matheson Is A Strong Fit with This Particular Canadiens Roster

Sources indicate Matheson has earned high praise within the organization. Canadiens head coach Martin St. Louis, along with team captain Nick Suzuki, values his performance, particularly now that he’s paired with offseason addition Noah Dobson. The Canadiens are a young and upcoming team. They need valued members of the roster who can bring experience, play, and aren’t past their prime years. Matheson fits as the Canadiens work their way into continued playoff conversations.

Over the past season, Matheson has grown more comfortable in his role as a top-pair defenseman, logging significant minutes and contributing reliably at both ends of the ice.

With the cap space available, re-signing Matheson seems feasible. At the same time, the Canadiens have created a culture where players are starting to take less to make things work. Is Matheson prepared to do the same?
