Canadiens Sign Maksymilian Szuber To One-Year Contract

The Montreal Canadiens announced today that they have signed defenseman Maksymilian Szuber to a one-year, two-way contract.

The 23-year-old finished his 2025-26 season with the Tucson Roadrunners, the AHL affiliate of the Utah Mammoth. He scored 11 goals for 27 points in 65 AHL games on the final year of his entry-level contract, signed back in 2023-24; a three-year deal at $859K AAV. He played 1 NHL game with the Arizona Coyotes on that contract.

Montreal originally acquired the services of Szuber in a trade earlier this summer. The Utah Mammoth acquired forward Joshua Roy from Montreal for the German defender in a depth-for-depth trade. A few hours later, the Mammoth announced that they had signed Roy to a one-year, two-way contract for the 2026-27 season at an $850K salary.

Szuber was originally a 6th-round-pick of the Coyotes, at 163rd overall in the 2022 NHL Draft. In total with the Roadrunners, Szuber has scored 25 goals and 87 points in 200 career AHL games. Before that, he played in Germany, helping Munich win the Deutsche Eishockey Liga (DEL) championship in 2022-23 and later helping take home silver with Germany at the 2023 IIHF World Championships.

The 6-foot-3, 200 lb defender is known as a physical player who demonstrates maturity. He’s said to make sound reads and sometimes can make offensive plays if the space is granted. The one area of his game that will require more rounding out is his skating, which is said to be choppy at times, leading to costly turnovers. Improvements to that area of his game will make him formidable. He was ranked 9th last year among the Mammoth’s top prospects according to Seth Ditchfield of Elite Prospects.
