Canadiens trade defenseman Jeff Petry to Penguins

On Saturday, the Montreal Canadiens traded defenseman Jeff Petry and forward Ryan Poehling to the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for defenseman Mike Matheson and a 2023 fourth-round pick.

Petry played 68 games for the Canadiens last season, posting 27 points (6 goals, 21 assists). A 12-year NHL veteran, Petry spent parts of the previous eight seasons with Montreal.

Over 508 games with the Canadiens, Petry compiled 248 points (70 goals, 178 assists).

Petry was originally a second-round pick (No. 45) by the Edmonton Oilers in 2006. The veteran defenseman played five seasons for the Oilers before being traded to Montreal for two draft picks in 2015.

The 34-year-old has three years remaining on a four-year, $25M contract. Petry will make $4.5M in 2022-23 and 2023-24 and $3M in 2024-25.

Poehling, 23, was selected with the No. 25 pick in the first round of the 2017 draft by the Canadiens. He played in 57 games for Montreal last season, finishing with 17 points (9 goals, 8 assists). Poehling has played 85 games for the Canadiens over the previous three seasons, tallying 22 points (13 goals, 9 assists).

Matheson heads to Montreal from Pittsburgh in the deal. The 28-year-old defenseman had 31 points (11 goals, 20 assists) in 74 games for the Penguins last season.

The Florida Panthers drafted Matheson with the No. 23 pick in the first round of the 2012 draft. He spent five seasons with the Panthers before being dealt to Pittsburgh in 2020.

The trade for Pittsburgh was their second of the day. Earlier on Saturday, the Penguins traded defenseman John Marino to the New Jersey Devils in exchange for defenseman Ty Smith and a 2023 third-round draft pick.
