When it rains, it pours for the Vancouver Canucks and their early-season injuries.

Conor Garland did not join his teammates for the third period of their game against the New York Rangers. Halfway through the third period, the Canucks announced that the forward would not return to the game:

Head Coach Adam Foote had no update on Garland postgame and said the team was still evaluating him and would likely know more in the morning.

It’s unclear when Garland got hurt. However, he was on the receiving end of a massive hit from Sam Carrick in the neutral zone at the tail end of the first period.

Defenceman Marcus Pettersson came to Garland’s defence, dropping the gloves with Carrick a few seconds later.

If this were anything more than precautionary, Garland would join Quinn Hughes, Nils Höglander, Filip Chytil, Teddy Blueger, Derek Forbort, Jonathan Lekkerimäki and Victor Mancini on the Canucks’ lengthy injury list.

This would be a significant blow to the Canucks’ offence if Garland misses time. He currently leads the team in points this season with 11 (three goals and eight assists). Garland averages the most ice time per game (21 minutes), playing in all situations of the game.

His teammate Kiefer Sherwood spoke postgame about how significant a loss it would be if Garland were injured and emphasized the team’s need to come together in his absence.

“Yeah, I mean that’s a guy you can’t really replace. He’s a big part of our team in all situations. Hoping he’s okay and we’ll see. Like I said, we got to pull the rope a unite and just stick together as a team and, you know, kind of win as a committee.”

After Tuesday night’s shutout loss to the New York Rangers in JT Miller’s return, the Canucks will hit the road for a three-game road trip against the St. Louis Blues on Thursday, the Minnesota Wild on Saturday, and the Nashville Predators on Monday. We will have to wait for an update on Garland to see whether he will join his team on the road trip.
