Coming off a successful 1st year with the Vancouver Canucks, goaltender Kevin Lankinen is revealing some secrets behind his breakout with the team.
Because of the struggles of now-former prospect goalie Arturs Silovs along with the injury concerns to starter Thatcher Demko, the Vancouver Canucks decided to take a chance on goaltender Kevin Lankinen.
Lankinen performed better than anyone could have asked of him, and was rewarded with a new 5 year contract. He'll remain with the Canucks for the next several years and team up with Demko as the official tandem in Vancouver, as Silovs was recently traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins.
Now, Lankinen is revealing some of the secrets behind his success in his 1st year in Vancouver. He credited goaltending coach Marko Torenius as a major reason for his success.
I'm just really excited to keep working with him because he's such a brilliant goalie mind. He does his thing, he's calm, he doesn't get too high, he doesn't get too low, but he's still expecting you to perform on a consistent level, whether it's practice or a game. So, I'm really excited about the future, because now that we can just continue building from where we are right now, only the sky's the limit.
Lankinen also gave a special shoutout to defenseman Tyler Myers.
He's been driving me back and forth from the airport; we've been having some really good conversations. He took me under his wing a little bit too, just to show around the city and kind of helped me with a lot of new things within Vancouver. The other guy is obviously Quinn, looking at him, how good and dialled he is every game. He wants to be the best; he wants to be as great as he can be. And the way he's carrying the team, there's a lot on his shoulders.
Lankinen went 25-15-10 with a 2.62 GAA, a .902 SV% and had 4 shutouts in his 1st year with the Canucks.
Lankinen went undrafted into the NHL and later signed an entry level contract with the Chicago Blackhawks, with whom he started his career.
He later signed with the Nashville Predators, and would be re-signed again to a 1 year contract.
Unable to come to terms with the Predators, he would land in Vancouver last year on a 1 year contract, which he later turned into a 5 year extension.
