The Vancouver Canucks have announced that Guillaume Brisebois is out indefinitely due to a lower-body injury.

The cause and the specifics of Brisebois’ injury is unknown, as the Canucks have not confirmed it. At the start of training camp, Canucks general manager Patrik Allvin did not mention Brisebois when referring to the players who were injured. But in training camp, Brisebois was playing with a red jersey, indicating that he was hurt. He’s since had surgery for the injury, and his timeline for return is unknown at this time.

Brisebois has always been a fringe NHLer on the Canucks’ depth chart throughout his career, so this injury to start the season likely spoils any chance of him being a full-time NHLer this year. Derek Forbort, Filip Hronek, Quinn Hughes, Tyler Myers, Elias Nils Pettersson and Marcus Pettersson make up the Canucks’ likely top-six to start the season, with Pierre-Olivier Joseph also in the mix, so Brisebois would have been in tough to secure a full-time role anyways.

However, it is for sure a blow to the lineup of the Canucks’ minor-league affiliate, the Abbotsford Canucks, as they look to defend their Calder Cup title. Brisebois played a pivotal role for Abbotsford winning the championship that season, and with a young group of blueliners including Kirill Kudryavtsev, Victor Mancini, Sawyer Mynio and Tom Willander, the 28-year-old would have been a helpful veteran presence on that team.

Brisebois spent most of his 2024-25 season in the AHL with Abbotsford, getting two goals and three assists for five points in 48 games in the regular season, along with two goals and one assists for three points in 21 playoff games on route to the Calder Cup win. He also played in three games with Vancouver, going pointless in all three games.

The Canucks resume their preseason action on Sunday when they visit the Edmonton Oilers at 5 p.m. PST. Vancouver is currently 2-1-0 through three games.
