Canucks Place Filip Chytil On Injured Reserve

The Canucks have placed forward Filip Chytil on injured reserve, retroactive to September 24, general manager Ryan Johnson announced today. The 27-year-old was hurt in the first period of Thursday’s preseason game against the Oilers after colliding with referee Riley Brace in the corner.

Johnson told reporters that Chytil came down on his shoulder and is dealing with “more of a muscular strain” rather than anything more serious. He called Chytil week-to-week, adding that there is “nothing at this point that is alarming.” He also said it was an “unfortunate bounce for a guy that’s been through so much,” per The Hockey News’ Adam Kierszenblat. The IR placement is retroactive, but Chytil isn’t expected to be ready for the start of the regular season.

That history is well documented. Chytil has five reported concussions in his career. The most recent came in March 2025 on a hit from Jason Dickinson, weeks after Vancouver acquired him from the Rangers in the J.T. Miller trade. Concussion-related issues and migraines limited him last season, and a deflected shot in practice in February broke bones in his face and ended his regular season. He finished 2025-26 with three goals in 12 games. In 27 games with Vancouver, he has five goals and nine points.

The Czech center is entering the final year of the four-year, $17.75MM extension he signed with New York in March 2023. It carries a $4.4375MM cap hit, and he’s on track to become an unrestricted free agent next summer. In 405 career games, Chytil has 80 goals and 173 points. His best season came in 2022-23, when he had 22 goals and 45 points in 74 games.
