The day after their fourth preseason game, the Vancouver Canucks made some roster cuts, playing four new players on waivers.

According to insider Frank Seravalli, the Canucks have placed forwards Joe LaBate and Mackenzie MacEachern, defenceman Jimmy Schuldt and goaltender Jiri Patera.

LaBate, 32, signed a one-year, two-way contract with the Canucks over the summer. It was a full circle moment for LaBate, as he was drafted by the Canucks in the fourth round (101 overall) in the 2011 draft. He made his NHL debut 2016-17, playing 13 games

This preseason saw a lot of LaBate. He suited up in three of the four games, finding the scoresheet in the preseason opener on the road against the Seattle Kraken. LaBate’s biggest impact actually came without his gloves on, dropping the mitts in both of the first two games with John Hayden and Joel Farabee.

MacEachern, 31, signed a two-year, two-way contract on July 1. He appeared in two preseason games, but was held pointless despite being put in a favourable situation, skating on the top line with Nils Höglander and Filip Chytil against the Calgary Flames in Abbotsford. MacEachern suited up in Sunday night’s game against the Edmonton Oilers in a fourth line role, finishing with one shot on goal and one hit in 9:39 minutes of ice time.

Schuldt, 30, did not see much preseason action. He appeared on opening night in Seattle, but after a strugglesome performance, finishing as a minus-3 rating in 17:28 minutes of ice time. With the recent news of Guillaume Brisebois having surgery to repair a lower-body injury, Schuldt will have an opportunity to replace his veterans presence on Abbotsford’s young blueline.

Patera, 26, has not seen much action in a Canucks uniform since signing a two-year, two-way contract last summer. The Czech netminder appeared in seven games for Abbotsford last season, before a lower-body injury ended his season late in 2024. He will look to to have a bounceback year whether that be in Abbotsford or Kalamazoo.
