Canucks’ Suter day-to-day with upper body injury
? Bob Frid-USA TODAY Sports

The Vancouver Canucks have one game remaining on their preseason schedule until their 2024-2025 season opener. Their last preseason game will be in Rogers Arena against the Edmonton Oilers on October 4.

With 27 players still on the Canucks’ roster (15 forwards, nine defenceman and three goaltenders), there are still players vying for lineup spots. After today, another roster spot may be available in the forward corps.

Rick Tocchet met with the media after the Canucks’ practice at UBC and updated us on the status of Pius Suter.

“Day-to-day, upper body. That’s pretty well it,” Tocchet said when asked about the second straight absence from practice for Suter and how his evaluation went yesterday.

The Canucks head coach kept it short and sweet on Wednesday. However, Tuesday after practice, Tocchet revealed why Suter missed practice and when this injury may have occurred.

“He’s being evaluated. He got banged up on the scuffle there [with Perry],” said Tocchet.

Suter got tangled up with Oilers captain Connor McDavid through the neutral zone as the two exchanged shoves. Corey Perry then came to his captain’s defence and caused a scrum with all the players on the ice.

Training camp and preseason standout Aatu Räty filled in for Suter on the third line between Nils Höglander and Conor Garland – a line he’s skated with for the majority of camp and preseason.

“Yeah. I thought Räts [Räty] between them in the preseason, they’ve had some good games together,” Tocchet disclosed on what he’s looking for out of the remaining options to play with Höglander and Garland. “[They had] Another good practice. I think Gars [Garland] does a good job of kind of making that line go, and they were good today. So we’ll see if they play on Friday.”

The timeline for Suter remains to be seen. He will have one week to heal before the puck drops on opening night in Rogers Arena against the Calgary Flames on October 9.
