The NHL’s department of player safety has fined Vancouver Canucks defenceman Tyler Myers $2,500 for a cup-check slash on Edmonton Oilers captain Connor McDavid.

The incident happened nearly halfway through Saturday night’s game between the two teams. McDavid skated down to the left side of the Canucks’ net, when Myers turned to face him, lifting his stick between McDavid’s legs.

McDavid hit the ice in understandable discomfort, but got up shortly after rejoining the play. And while that wasn’t called a penalty on the ice, Myers found his way into the sin bin 46 seconds later, taking a delay of game penalty.

It was one of many penalties the Canucks took in Saturday’s game, granting the Oilers power play five chances to core with the man advantage. While they were unable to capitalize as Thatcher Demko continually slammed the door, the Oilers got the last laugh winning 3-1.

Myers also made noise Saturday for a huge hit on Oilers winger Trent Frederic at the Vancouver blueline, as former Oiler Evander Kane laid a few punishing hits of his own on Oilers defenceman Alec Regula.

Games between the Oilers and Canucks that have seen the department of player safety get involved is nothing new. In fact, after a game in January last season, McDavid and Myers were each suspended for three games for cross-checking. Connor Garland had hauled McDavid to the ice and wouldn’t let him up, leading the Oilers captain to retaliate, as Myers cross-checked Oilers defenceman Evan Bouchard in the face shortly thereafter.

The first meeting of this season clearly brought some fireworks and it won’t be long until these two teams meet again. Edmonton will visit Vancouver on October 26th, and on January 17th, 2026, while the Canucks will visit Alberta’s capital in the Oilers’ final regular season game on April 16th, 2026.
