The goaltending shuffle across the league continues today with Washington waiving Remi Poirier, shared by Sportsnet’s Elliotte Friedman this afternoon.
2026-27 has brought much instability to the 25-year-old who still awaits his NHL debut. Exactly one week ago the goaltender was acquired by the Capitals from New Jersey in exchange for a seventh round pick (2027). They sought out such a move after losing their own strong AHL goalie and #3 option Clay Stevenson from waivers to Winnipeg.
The deal to Washington spelled the end of only a short stint in Newark for Poirier, who had been snagged off the waiver wire from his original team, the Dallas Stars. At the time the Devils had some question marks in net, a team fully built to contend standing on unsteady ground with Jake Allen and Nico Daws. Their aggressive pursuit of contention was only magnified when they traded for star Connor Hellebuyck, effectively shutting down any real path for Poirier to get into games for New Jersey.
Meanwhile there’s not much more opportunity in D.C. either for the former sixth round selection with the duo of Logan Thompson and Charlie Lindgren standing in his way. Always a bit eyebrow raising to place somebody up for grabs that they traded for only so recently, although they held three goaltenders on the roster over the past week the plan was always to try and get Poirier through waivers down to AHL Hershey. We’ll have our answer in the next 24 hours.
As long as he can make it through without joining his fourth organization of the season, Poirier would be a tremendous asset for the Bears. Last season he tied Devon Levi for the most games played in the AHL (52) fairing quite well with a 2.61 GAA which was 13th best in the league. He ranked second in wins (27) and a strong .912 SV% was eighth best.
Always known as one of the most successful AHL franchises with two Calder Cup titles in the past four years, the Bears are currently 8th in league standings. It’s not like they’ve been lacking in the goaltending department either, with former NHLer Cal Petersen leading the crease so far. Although unusual for an organization to sport two such qualified names for their farm club, the Iowa native Petersen is inked only on a one-year AHL deal. Therefore he is not eligible for an NHL call-up, leaving a real need to keep Poirier around as a strong depth piece.
Opposing teams will have a chance to throw a wrench in that plan, picking up Poirier’s manageable expiring deal worth $850k. Look no further than the club he spent six years with as a possible suitor, as if Dallas were to be the only team to submit a claim they could immediately assign him back to the Texas Stars. Without the trusty Quebec native who made 137 appearances for them from 2022-26, Texas is currently dead last in AHL standings as so far they’ve received lackluster results with Brandon Halverson in net. Whatever happens with Poirier it’s most likely he’ll finally be settled in at the American League level to finally get into some games after a tumultous start to the campaign. He has some competition on the wire today for any teams with their eye on a true NHLer as Chicago waived Arvid Söderblom.
