Capitals Sign Ryan Leonard to 8-Year Extension

“We are extremely excited to sign Ryan to a long-term contract with our club,” Senior Vice President and General Manager Chris Patrick told the team’s website on Tuesday. “Ryan is a young and talented player who is still years away from entering his prime, and we believe he has tremendous potential to continue growing into an important player for this organization. While reaching his full potential will take time, we have been impressed with his work ethic and the way he continues to develop his game.” 

The eighth overall pick in the 2023 NHL Draft has showcased his scoring ability despite limited ice time, averaging under 15:00 minutes per night in head coach Spencer Carbery’s lineup. With some forward additions this offseason, like Tuch and Jordan Kyrou, it could be difficult for Leonard to find additional playing time in the top six. It will be up to him to make his mark, especially on the power play, where he ranked third among rookies with 14 power-play points in 2025-26.

Leonard is a Perfect Fit in Washington

Leonard is a perfect fit on a veteran roster featuring Ovechkin, Tuch, Kyrou, Tom Wilson, and Boone Jenner, and he will be an important building block for the post-Ovechkin era. Inking him to an eight-year extension on the last possible day was a shrewd piece of business by Washington’s GM – the max term for NHL contracts will be seven years as of Wednesday.

Leonard was the fifth-highest scoring rookie in the NHL last season, trailing only Beckett Senneke (23 goals), Matthew Schaefer (23), Oliver Kapanen (22), and Jimmy Snuggerud (21). He scored one more goal than Ivan Demidov (19) and two more than Fraser Minten (18), another young player who signed a long-term contract extension this month.

Leonard’s 20 goals showcase why he was considered one of the league’s top prospects before arriving from Boston College in 2024. He totaled 109 points over 78 games with the Eagles before making his NHL debut at the end of the 2024-25 season. He scored one goal in nine games as the Capitals captured the top spot in the Eastern Conference. He then recorded one assist in eight postseason contests, his only playoff action to date after Washington missed out on a postseason appearance in 2025-26.

The Capitals will be looking for him to replicate that performance this season and become one of the top 30 players in the NHL to match his new contract. However, he should have plenty of help around him to avoid a sophomore slump, with the additions to the Capitals’ forward group this offseason.  

This long-term contract extension is a high-upside swing for both the team and the player. Given the changing landscape for deals, it is a worthwhile swing on a player who could be a huge benefit to Washington now and in the future if he can maximize his upside well ahead of his prime.
