Ovechkin has long been the face of Washington’s NHL franchise. He won a Stanley Cup with the team, and has broken all sorts of NHL records. This season, the grizzled veteran has 64 points for a Caps team that won four in a row to close the year.
Washington defeated the Columbus Blue Jackets on Tuesday, 2-1. The Capitals close the year with a 43-30-9 record.
Ovechkin has already accomplished so much in his career, but he also added another feather to his cap on Tuesday. He is one of five NHL players all-time to play 82 games in a season while over the age of 40, per NHL.com.
“We’ve talked about it before, his durability through his career,” Capitals coach Spencer Carbery said. “And when it’s all said and done and you dissect how he was able to be so successful of a goal scorer and NHL player, that is a big part of it. The longevity and the durability and him being able to consistently be in the lineup every single night is big part of why he’s been able to reach the goal record and be so consistent for so many years.”
The other four players to do that are: Jaromir Jagr, Teemu Selanne, Nicklas Lidstrom and Dave Andreychuk. It is truly a remarkable accomplishment for the player known as “Ovi.”
Capitals fans hope their star is not headed to retirement. Time will tell if Ovechkin is truly done with NHL hockey.
