The Washington Capitals opened their second-round playoff series with a 2-1 overtime loss to the Carolina Hurricanes on Tuesday night, falling behind 1-0 in the best-of-seven despite leading for nearly 50 minutes.
Aliaksei Protas gave the Capitals a lead early in the second period, but Logan Stankoven tied it midway through the third after a defensive giveaway.
Ultimately, Carolina’s Jaccob Slavin scored the game-winner in OT through a screen, capping a victorious night in which the Canes outshot Washington 33–14.
Capitals goaltender Logan Thompson made 31 saves in defeat, while Frederik Andersen returned from injury to backstop the Hurricanes, stopping 13 of 14 shots.

Late in regulation, with the score still tied, Tom Wilson found a moment to test Sebastian Aho’s patience.
As the two tangled during a stoppage of play following a whistle, Wilson reached in and swiped Aho’s mouth guard directly from his mouth.
Wilson held onto it briefly before being forced to hand it back by officials after Aho complained.
It was a classic Wilson move as he tried to provoke retaliation from Aho and potentially draw a penalty at a key moment, but it didn’t work.
Wilson, who was involved in multiple controversial incidents during the first-round series against the Montreal Canadiens, commented on the loss after the game.
“There’s enough experience in this group. It’s one game,” Wilson said. “There’s going to be ups and downs. The next game’s the biggest game.”
Head coach Spencer Carbery, meanwhile, wasn't pleased with his team's outing.
"It wasn't good and that's the bottom line. Our entire game was not good," Carbery said. "We'll talk about the things that have to change for Game 2."
Game 2 is scheduled for Thursday night in Washington before the series shifts to Raleigh for Games 3 and 4.
