Capitals’ Wilson ejected for boarding Panthers’ Vilmanis

Well, it’s been a while since we’ve had to write something like this.

During a matchup between the Washington Capitals and Florida Panthers on Saturday afternoon, Capitals forward Tom Wilson was ejected after boarding Panthers defenseman Sandis Vilmanis.

The incident came a little before the halfway mark of the opening period in the U.S. capital. As Vilmanis was trying to move the puck out of the Florida zone, Wilson came from his side, but ended up drilling the Latvian blueliner into the sideboards from behind.

Vilmanis went down to the Panthers’ dressing room following the hit. Wilson was given a five-minute major for boarding and a game misconduct.

While it’s too early to tell whether his actions will result in any additional consequences, Wilson is far from unfamiliar with supplemental discipline. The 32-year-old has been suspended six times by the NHL Department of Player Safety, including three times during the 2017-18 season, and fined on five other occasions. Wilson has tried to keep his nose clean lately, as he hasn’t been fined or suspended since April 2025.

The Toronto native earned a reputation for being a dirty player, but as he has grown older, he has tried to mold his game into more of an effective power forward, rather than a brute force. Yet, he’s registered at least 100 points in each of the past three seasons, though he hasn’t come close to challenging his career-high 187 points, which came during that 2017-18 campaign.

In 14 games with Washington so far this season, Wilson has scored two goals and three assists for five points. His 45 penalty minutes put him second in the NHL behind Boston Bruins defender Nikita Zadorov.
