Carolina Hurricanes Acquire Juuso Välimäki from Mammoth

The Carolina Hurricanes made a quiet trade tonight as they acquired defenseman Juuso Välimäki from the Utah Mammoth in exchange for future considerations. Välimäki has been out of the Mammoth lineup this season due to injuries. He’s yet to play for Utah this season. In three games in the AHL with the Tucson Roadrunners this season he has a goal and two assists. He’s plus-six with a game-winning goal.

Jusso Välimäki

The Calgary Flames drafted Välimäki 16th overall in the 2017 NHL Entry Draft. In three seasons with the Flames, he appeared in 82 games recording 16 points on three goals and 13 assists. He was a minus-four with a game-winning goal. The Arizona Coyotes claimed him off waivers back in 2022. In two seasons in Arizona, he played in 146 games recording 51 points on six goals and 45 assists. He was a plus-two with a power-play goal and a game-winning goal.

The team then moved to Utah where last season he played in 43 games recording two goals and three assists; he was a minus-five. In 271 career NHL games, he has 72 points on 11 goals and 61 assists. He’s a minus-seven with a power-play goal and two game-winning goals. In 59 career AHL games, he has 35 points on seven goals and 28 assists. He’s a +16 with three game-winning goals. 

Wrap Up

The Hurricanes continue to add depth having added forward Noah Philp off waivers. Now Välimäki joins the team. It is unknown where Välimäki will report either as an option for Carolina or to get more playing time in the AHL with the Chicago Wolves.
