The Olympics may be holding the attention of the hockey world. However, the Carolina Hurricanes have taken care of some business during the break. News emerged on Monday afternoon that goalie Brandon Bussi has signed a contract extension. The deal is for three seasons and will be for a total value of $5.7 million for the life of the deal. This contract runs through the end of the 2028-29 season and has an average cap hit of $1.9 million per season.

Bussi has broken out this season with the Hurricanes after being claimed off waivers from the Florida Panthers in October 2025. The 27-year-old has a 23-3-1 record with a 2.16 goals-against-average. He also has a .906 save percentage and two shutouts so far this campaign.
The Sound Beach, New York native was a veteran of the AHL before this season. He played in 111 career games, where he played with the Boston Bruins AHL affiliate in Providence. Bussi was a standout netminder with Western Michigan of the NCAA. He 46-25-5 with a 2.61 goals-against average and .910 save percentage. However, he went undrafted.
“Given the opportunity at the NHL level this season, he’s proven to be a winner here too,” said Canes General Manager Eric Tulsky. “We are thrilled that he will continue to provide a steady presence in the crease for this team into the future.”
Carolina had some worry about its crease after Pyotr Kochetkov was lost for the rest of the season due to injury. However, Bussi has stabilized things and given the Hurricanes freedom to pursue other options at the trade deadline. I
It’ll be interesting to see how Bussi does when the Stanley Cup Playoffs roll around. However, the Hurricanes do have a seemingly solid tandem with Bussi and veteran goalie Frederik Andersen. This deal seems like a low-risk, high-reward deal for the Hurricanes.
