Chicago Blackhawks: Patrick Kane makes promise after joining team

The Chicago Blackhawks brought back Patrick Kane this week on a two-year contract worth $16 million.

Kane, a nine-time All-Star player, won three Stanley Cup championships with the Blackhawks. The 37-year-old has not made an All-Star appearance since 2020, but he’ll bring veteran leadership to Chicago and will help the offense out while Connor Bedard is out with a shoulder injury to start the season.

On Friday, Kane spoke about his plans with the Blackhawks during his news conference. He promised fans that he didn’t sign with Chicago just to take a joyride with a franchise he once led. He wants to be a star again for the Blackhawks.

“I’m not coming home to ride off into the sunset,” Kane said, via Charlie Roumeliotis of WGN. “I want to be a big player here.”

There’s no way Kane will be able to play at the level he did even in his final season with Chicago.

Kane left the Blackhawks after the 2022-23 season. He spent time with the New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings. He scored 57 points on 16 goals and 41 assists for Detroit last season through 67 games.

Still, Kane can be an asset for an offense that needed a lot of help this offseason.

Kane said he’s looking forward to playing with Bedard this season.

“It was cool to hear his comments and the excitement that he would have with me coming back,” Kane said. “He seems like a great kid. I’ve talked with him a bunch before and skated with him before.

“He has all the potential in the world. He makes plays that other players can’t. He’s got that special it factor, so it would be fun to play with him.”

Kane should play with Bedard on the ice later this season, sometime around November. Until then, the Blackhawks hope that Kane can turn back the clock and keep the team in the playoff hunt until Bedard returns.
