We often talk about Cole Caufield’s spectacular goals. Shots on goal, powerplay goals that change the mood of a game and overtime goals that bring Habs fans to their feet.
But there’s one statistic that best sums up his real importance to the Canadiens this season.
Caufield scored 12 goals to give his team the lead. Yes, twelve.
To put that in perspective, only young forward Dylan Guenther has the same total, while established players like Jack Eichel and Brock Nelson follow close behind with 11 goals. In other words, Caufield scores while the result of the match is still hanging by a thread.
Most goals to give his team the lead this season:
Cole Caufield, MTL: 12
Dylan Guenther, UTA: 12
Jack Eichel, VGK: 11
Brock Nelson, COL: 11– Guillaume Villemaire (@GVillemaire13) January 18, 2026
After 49 games played, the American forward already has 24 goals, including three in his last two games. The pace is clear: if he keeps up this pace, he’s heading for a 40-goal season. But the most important thing to remember isn’t the number, it’s the importance of each of his goals for the Habs.
But there’s another detail that speaks volumes about his role on the team.
His last goal was the 141st of his NHL career, and 70 of those goals were set up by his captain, Nick Suzuki.

The chemistry between Caufield and Suzuki is obvious. The duo is inseparable and is allowed to play among the best in the league. The two instinctively find each other, understand each other on the ice and elevate each other’s game. When the Canadiens need a big goal, they’re almost always the ones in the thick of it.
This duo is an offensive engine for the Habs. Not because they produce so much, but because they do it at the right time.
The 12 goals that gave the Canadiens the lead did not happen by chance. They testify to a player who fully assumes his role and responds when the pressure is on. Let’s not forget that the U.S. team ignored him in preparation for the upcoming Olympic Games in February.
At just 24 years of age, number 13 is no longer just a promising prospect. He has established himself as a key player, capable of turning a match on its head with a single shot.
And with Nick Suzuki at his side, the best is yet to come for the Canadiens’ young forward.
