The Winnipeg Jets had an up-and-down season last year, finishing with a 35-35 record and second to last place in the Central Division. There is a chance that the Jets could be an improved team next season, and it all starts with what they do this offseason.

One of the latest moves they made was to extend a key player, according to Danielle Bain of TSN Sports.

“I’m hearing Cole Perfetti and the Winnipeg Jets have agreed on a 5 year extension at 6 million per. Excellent signing for the team and a young player who wants to stay long-term in Winnipeg,” Bain wrote on X, formerly Twitter.

Perfetti was solid for the Jets this past season, recording 32 points and 20 penalty minutes in 68 games. He also set a career high with 15:37 time-on-ice per game.

The season before was good to Perfetti as well, as he set career highs for points and assists in 82 games. During the playoffs, he scored the latest tying goal in a Game 7 in NHL history to lead the Jets to a win against the St. Louis Blues in the first round.

The Jets may not be done this season, and there have been rumors they’re interested in trading for Connor Hellebuyck. Mike McIntyre of the Winnipeg Free Press believes the Jets have a chance at landing him.

“The writing is on the wall here in Winnipeg. Hellebuyck is (almost certainly) moving on. That became apparent on July 1 when the Jets did not re-sign his personal security blanket, Eric Comrie, allowing him to pursue a new opportunity in San Jose,” McIntyre wrote. “And it became crystal clear when the Jets did sign Stuart Skinner — a guy who has made at least 50 starts every year of his NHL career — to a two-year US$7.50 million contract ($3.75 million per season).”
