Rankings

Cole Reschny is a do-it-all center for the Victoria Royals. He’s a high-level playmaker for the 2025 class, leading the WHL in assists per game played among draft-eligible players. Heavily involved both offensively and defensively, chipping in to retrieve pucks and consequently maintain the flow of the game, Reschny’s small size is less of a concern because he doesn’t let it prevent him from making an impact. He’s a candidate to be chosen in the first round.

Let’s look at production. Across 57 games this season, Reschny has 23 goals and 62 assists for 85 points, along with a plus-41 rating. In WHL scoring overall, he finds himself in 10th place. But when limited to draft-eligible skaters, he climbs up to second. Reschny’s production, especially for an 11.9% shooter (the worst shooting percentage of his WHL career), is terrific. So, how does he do it?

A big reason is Reschny’s superb hockey brain. He reads plays well, displaying exceptional passing ability to put his teammates in positions to score. He is an elite creator of space for his linemates, waiting for the perfect moment to dish pucks across. Reschny is able to force defenders on him so those around him have more breathing room. He maximizes the fullest potential of a roster that lost more games in regulation alone than they won in total last season.

Reschny is also adept at gathering loose pucks. Though he can be out-muscled, he’s willing to engage in puck battles, and he holds his own in those situations. Thus, his possession game is excellent.

Another strength here is Reschny’s defensive game. He’s involved on the backcheck, helping to prevent odd-man situations. He’s not afraid to play down low to get the puck out of the zone. His complete game has made the Royals a noticeably better team when he’s on the ice. Reschny drives play at a very high level, and adds to that with a 56.92% face-off win rate (out of over 1,000 draws this season).

Reschny’s understanding of the game has allowed him to be deployed in every kind of situation. On both special teams units, he’s out there. To start periods, he’s out there. In empty-net situations, he’s out there. There’s a lot to like about this player.

Cole Reschny  NHL Draft Projection

Reschny’s combination of skills and two-way production should make him a clear-cut first-round pick—no overthinking it. His brains and usage in all situations should make him primed to go off the board around the mid-to-late teens, or perhaps around the early 20s. Small centers can fall in the draft, even if they are productive, but Reschny is poised to walk up to the podium on day one.

Quotables

“He has great patience and his puck control is top notch. He has great on-ice vision as he has great attention to detail and his passing and playmaking skills are very precise and accurate. He can spot seams very easily, has soft hands in tight spaces and plays with a great amount of energy and drive.” – Peter Baracchini, The Hockey Writers

“The way he can read the play and take advantage of the tiniest opportunity or misstep by an opponent is one of his biggest strengths and something that will benefit him greatly if he can translate it to the next level. He plays with a great pace and work ethic, though we’d like to see him take over and control the game more.” – Hannah Stuart, Bleacher Report

“Reschny is an active player who generally works hard in all three zones. He can be deployed in a variety of roles, but leans offence more than checking forward overall. Reschny is usually involved in traffic.” – Jason Bukala, Sportsnet

NHL Potential

Ultimately, Reschny projects as a two-way, all-situations second-line or middle-six center. He’s a player who can win his minutes and also put up a decent amount of points for that type of usage—say, 50 to 60. Though Reschny has shown he doesn’t need it to be effective, a good supporting cast could help him reach even greater heights.
