Complications Surface with Devon Toews’ Selection to Team Canada

Colorado Avalanche defenseman Devon Toews was selected for Team Canada on Wednesday, but there could be a potential complication when it comes to him making it to Italy. Toews and his wife are expecting a baby, and he noted that if the baby hasn’t arrived by the time he’s needed, he won’t be going.

His wife is due in February and he said that’s something that is way more important to him than making an Olympic team. “Being there for that is something that’s on my mind moreso than showing up for my country. I’ll be there when that time comes, but right now I’m there for my wife.”

He told the media:

“If my baby hasn’t arrived, I’m staying here. That’s that’s 100% what I’ll do, I’m not leaving until that baby’s here and everybody’s home safe. I think she’s excited, I think excited for me to have this opportunity, it doesn’t come every day. She’s excited for that, but I’ll be there for that baby, for sure.”

He added that he hasn’t talked to Hockey Canada about it, and didn’t think he needed to.

They might not feel the same. If there’s a chance he won’t be able to make it to the Olympics, they’ll need to know and potentially name a replacement from one of the many players who were under consideration.

When asked about getting the call to find out he was selected: “It’s cool. It should be a fun time. You know, kind of weird on a game day morning of getting it, but yeah, pretty honored nonetheless.” He added that it’s cool to be named to the team, and everyone’s excited for it.
