The New Jersey Devils could be without Luke Hughes for a while.
The star defenseman exited in the second period of the Devils’ road game against the Calgary Flames at Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, with a shoulder injury and did not return.
Hughes was going after the puck along the boards when he suddenly grimaced in pain after a Calgary player pulled his jersey from behind.

Following the contest, NHL insider Frank Seravalli said that the initial diagnosis of Hughes’ injury “sounds like” a shoulder dislocation.
Meanwhile, Devils head coach Sheldon Keefe said that Hughes is “going to miss time for sure” and that the 22-year-old blueliner will not be on the ice for the remainder of the team’s roadtrip, via James Nichols of New Jersey Hockey Now.
That is not great news for the Devils and their fans, as Hughes is one of their top blueliners in addition to being among New Jersey’s most reliable playmakers. He has 5 goals and 21 assists (third-most on the team) for 26 points through 49 gams played in the 2025-26 campaign.
New Jersey has won three of its last four outings and improved to 25-22-2 following the win against Calgary. The Devils will next face the Edmonton Oilers, Vancouver Canucks and Seattle Seahawks, all on the road, before returning home for a meeting with the Winnipeg Jets on Jan. 27.
