Connor Bedard signs $15 million extension with Blackhawks

2023 first overall pick Connor Bedard has signed a five-year, $15 million extension with the Chicago Blackhawks. The 21-year-old recorded 75 points in 69 games on the 31st-place Blackhawks last year.

Bedard started the season playing the best hockey of his career, remaining in the Art Ross Trophy race before he suffered a shoulder injury in December. His play kept the Blackhawks in a playoff race up until that point, but the team fell toward the bottom of the standings during his absence.

Bedard will miss the first month of the season after left shoulder surgery, which he underwent on July 8. Chicago is expected to take a positive step forward this year after another disappointing season, and Bedard’s offensive production will play a big role in their success.

His contract likely impacts negotiations for fellow No. 1 pick Macklin Celebrini, who has been eligible for an extension since July 1.
