Connor Brown reflects on time with Oilers, Pink Pony Club playoff anthem, and more

Since the 2021-22 season, “La Bamba” has played after every Edmonton Oilers home win. During the 2025 playoffs, Edmonton added another victory song: “Pink Pony Club” by Chappell Roan.

The catchy tune became a full-on anthem as the team made a second straight run to the Stanley Cup Final. Former Oilers forward Connor Brown appeared on the 100% Hockey Podcast with John Shannon and Daren Millard, revealing to them how the song became a staple in the team’s locker room after a win.

Brown: “We were keeping the whole thing hush-hush, but the reality is we were out for dinner in San Jose, and there was a girl playing piano, and she started singing ‘Pink Pony Club,’ and all the boys were bobbing their heads. We needed a new win song, so we were like, ‘This song is great.’ None of us had really heard it. We won the next game, put it on after, and that was it.

“The boys were having fun with it. Everyone was asking about it during the playoffs, ‘What’s the story?’ We kept our lips sealed and figured leaving it to the imagination was funnier.”

Shannon: “So this was your version of what the Blues did with ‘Gloria’ (during their Stanley Cup run in 2019)?”

Brown: “Yeah, I think so,” (laughs) “but to be honest, after we lost, I can’t listen to it anymore. It’s wiped off now. It stings.”

Many teams love to twist the knife and lean into the villain role. This is the case with the Panthers, who just won their second consecutive Stanley Cup. During Sam Bennett’s day with Lord Stanley in August, the Florida forward filmed himself water skiing with the Cup while jamming to Edmonton’s playoff banger.

Another interesting conversation was when Brown was asked about the difference between playing in Edmonton and Toronto. The forward was drafted by his hometown team, the Maple Leafs, in 2012 and played three full seasons with the club between 2015-16 and 2018-19.

Brown: “The thing about Edmonton is that every single person is invested in the Oilers. Toronto is a hockey mecca with a massive fanbase, but it is not the whole city. In Edmonton, it really felt like everyone was an Oilers fan. That was pretty cool.

“I grew up in Toronto, so playing for the Leafs, I mean, it’s incredible. I used to go to Leafs games as a kid. It’s a little more corporate, the Toronto games, but still incredible. You go to an Edmonton game, you know everyone’s driving in from all over, everybody’s got a jersey on, it’s just a different feeling. Whether one’s better than the other, I don’t think so. It’s just different, but I’m very privileged to have played in both spots.”

Connor Brown became a fan favourite in Edmonton over the course of his two seasons with the organization. His revealing the truth behind ‘Pink Pony Club’ adds a little bit of closure to a piece of Oilers lore, as fans rallied behind the song from April until June.

On July 1, 2025, Brown hit the free-agent market and ultimately signed with the New Jersey Devils for four years at $3 million per season.
