Team Canada clinched the top spot in Group A after beating Switzerland 5-1 in a preliminary round game on Friday at Milano Santagiulia Ice Hockey Arena. With the win, Canada improved to 2-0 and continues to look like a serious gold medal contender.
Just 24 hours after dominating Czechia 5-0, Canada once again showed its depth and firepower. The team has now outscored its opponents 10-1 through two games. Switzerland came into the matchup with confidence after its own strong start, but Canada’s star power proved too much to handle.
Connor McDavid once again led the way. After recording three assists in the win over Czechia, McDavid followed it up with a goal and two assists in the first period against Switzerland. That gave him six points in his first two Olympic games.
With that performance, McDavid became the first player ever to record six points in the opening two games of an Olympics featuring NHL participation. The previous best was five points, achieved by Marian Hossa and Teemu Selanne in 2006.

McDavid, who has been deemed Team Canada’s most important player at the Olympics, now has five points on Canada’s first seven goals of the tournament.
Goals for Canada came from Sidney Crosby, Nathan MacKinnon, Macklin Celebrini, and Thomas Harley, along with McDavid. Crosby, back at the Olympics for the first time since 2014, scored his first goal of the tournament. Meanwhile, 19-year-old Celebrini continued his impressive run, now with two goals in two games.
However, the game was not without controversy. Midway through the game, Sam Bennett caught Switzerland captain Nico Hischier high in the neutral zone with a stick to the face. The play went uncalled, which frustrated Swiss fans in attendance who threw beer cans onto the ice as tempers flared inside the arena.
Despite the heated moment, Canada stayed composed and finished the job. The team will now close out the round robin against France on Sunday.
