Connor McDavid has flown under the radar for most of the 2025-26 season, but that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. The Oilers captain has 56 points through 34 games, which is the second-most for a single player behind Nathan MacKinnon (58). His uptick in play comes at just the right time and is a big reason why Edmonton is surging up the Pacific Division standings.
One of the defining storylines early this season was the lack of production from McDavid, but those woes seem to be behind the 10-year veteran. The center didn’t find the back of the net until the Oilers’ seventh game, but his scoring is back on track after a string of good performances. McDavid hit the 20-goal mark during Edmonton’s win over Pittsburgh on Tuesday night, becoming the sixth player to do so this season.
In addition to finding his scoring groove, McDavid has been dishing assists left and right throughout most of the season. The Toronto native leads the league with 34, three more than the next closest player, Macklin Celebrini, who has 31. McDavid’s ability to get on the scoresheet is truly unmatched, and the Oilers captain has given the team a scoring boost when they need it most.
One of the biggest reasons McDavid has had such a great year after a slow start lies in the play of his longtime teammate, Leon Draisaitl. The duo has been one of the most consistent tandems in the league over the course of their careers, and this season is no different. Tuesday’s contest served as a reminder of how lethal they can be when playing together, as McDavid and Draisaitl both posted four points in the Oilers’ victory over the Penguins.
The pair have been part of each other’s careers and milestones for a long time now, and Tuesday was no exception. Draisaitl notched his 1,000th career point and became the 13th active player to reach the milestone, a mark McDavid reached last season. The duo is just the 12th and 13th active players to have tallied over 1,000 points, adding to already impressive resumes.
At this point in their careers, they are the top tandem in the NHL. In a time where players are leaving teams for bigger contracts, seeing the two of them stick together gives Oilers fans something to root for. McDavid and Draisaitl are just missing the biggest trophy of them all in terms of awards, but this year might just be the year with the way they’re playing.
Colorado’s Nathan MacKinnon has been the best player in the NHL this season, but McDavid isn’t far behind. The two players have been compared to one another for a long time, and the comparisons are well-deserved given how great they both are. The comparisons have only gotten more intense as the 2025-26 season has gotten deeper, with some saying that MacKinnon has surpassed McDavid as the best active player.
That being said, the two will team up this February at the 2026 Winter Olympics, a tournament sure to live up to the hype. Fans of Team Canada will get to see McDavid and MacKinnon in action for the first time since the 4 Nations Face-Off. The primer to the Olympics showcased just how well the two work together, which could create serious problems for other countries. Having two of the best players in the game is just about as unfair as you can get, but it’ll make for a good tournament and add a layer to the ongoing scoring race for the rest of the season.
McDavid had a lot riding on his shoulders coming into this season, and it was looking like he was going to fall short early on. That narrative is gone and over with, as the longtime Oiler has revamped his campaign with elite scoring and production. With Edmonton sitting in a playoff position entering play on Wednesday, fans can thank their captain for figuring it out before the season got too deep.
The 10-year veteran is shaping up to have yet another elite season, and the Oilers are looking to be a serious contender come spring. With that combination, the team might just be able to accomplish what has eluded them the past two seasons. If they do, it’ll be time to throw McDavid’s name in the greatest-of-all-time conversation.
