As the Edmonton Oilers try to figure out a path forward following another loss in the Stanley Cup Final, the front office has some extra motivation on its mind. Star forward Connor McDavid will be entering the final year of his current contract, and there are some around the NHL who believe he could leave Edmonton.
The Oilers front office will need to keep McDavid's upcoming free agency in mind when making any moves. The team will need to prove to McDavid that he can win in Edmonton, putting all the pressure on the organization.
If McDavid were to hit the open market, he would become one of the most highly coveted players in the history of sports. McDavid is seen by many as one of the greatest players in history, and players like him don't typically hit free agency.
Dan Powers of the Empty Netters podcast discussed the pending free agency of McDavid and urged the star to consider the rival Los Angeles Kings. McDavid would be following in the footsteps of former Oilers star Wayne Gretzky.
"I have said so many times — and this is not because we live in LA. — if we saw the King’s Ransom Part 2 and he got traded to LA, it would be the greatest thing to happen to the NHL in 50 years. It would be the greatest story of all time," Powers said.
If McDavid were to go to the Kings, it would certainly send a power shift throughout the NHL. Los Angeles is one of the biggest markets in the world, and putting the best player in the league on the roster would make the Kings true contenders every year.
The Kings and Oilers have been fierce rivals for years, so McDavid knows them fairly well. For all we know, McDavid may want to play elsewhere, but that all remains to be seen.
For now, the star is focused on trying to win a title with the Oilers. But if the team were to fall short again, McDavid could have a tough decision on his hands next offseason.
