Ahead of their critical Game 2 clash vs. the Stars, Oilers captain Connor McDavid sent a clear message to Dallas: that he and his team will be fully prepared.
The Edmonton Oilers rode into their Western Conference Final rematch against the Dallas Stars on a high horse, having taken eight of their last nine games since they made their switch after two games through Round 1.
But as Game 1 in Dallas launched their seven-game series, the past proved to be irrelevant. The more rounds a team advances, the narrower the error margin becomes. This is not uncharted territory for the Oilers.
They have returned from a 2-0 series deficit against the Kings during Round 1, and still carry the bitter memory of last season's Cup Final collapse, where they returned from a 3-0 deficit against Florida, only to lose Game 7 by a goal.
That kind of adversity has tempered their spirit. Being down by just one game to Dallas likely isn't the end of the world. Connor McDavid brought it into perspective after Game 1: pressure doesn't unsettle him.
'We've been really good in high-pressure situations, high-pressure games. Game two will be one of those.'- Connor McDavid
McDavid's message showed confidence, not one built on arrogance, but rather on experience and toughness.
After disposing of the high-powered Vegas Golden Knights in five games, Edmonton is not relying on just its stars. This post-season has been about being a group capable of getting through tough times and playing like a whole team.
No single game wins a series, but each gets a team closer to hockey's holy of holies.
And if there's anything the Edmonton Oilers' playoff experience has shown us thus far, it's that it's not high-scoring superstars who make the dream possible, but persevering as a team.
