Dallas’ Offseason Chaos: Inside the Stars’ Two Failed Blockbusters

Speaking on The Sheet with Jeff Marek, Keith Kavanaugh of PuckPedia discussed the Stars’ attempted deal for Werenski and said, “You mentioned… you still don’t think the Stars’ deal is off the table for Zach Werenski…” Marek quickly interjected: “Nope, I don’t.”

Clearly, Jim Nill is still keeping tabs on Werenski. But Werenski has made it fairly clear he wants to stay in Columbus and try to make it work there. If things go downhill, though, would a deal get done? It sounds like Nill would still pull the trigger, which puts Harley in an even tougher spot. Can you truly play at your best knowing you’re on the verge of being traded every night?

Another Failed Trade

Wildly enough, Nill “traded” another superstar this offseason: Jason Robertson. At a standoff in contract negotiations, Nill had the framework of a deal with the Seattle Kraken that would have sent Robertson there. An extension was even on the table — eight years at $15 million AAV. Ultimately, Robertson declined the extension and nixed the trade.

Trading two of your best players in one offseason is almost unheard of. Having both deals fall apart and then trying to make things work with both players makes the situation even more fascinating. Robertson eventually signed a one-year deal worth $12 million AAV, staying at least one more season, but Nill will have to handle this delicately. To make the money work, Nill also had to trade away young talent in Mavrik Bourque — a move that, according to Marek, did not sit well with many players.

Back in July on The Sheet, Marek discussed Robertson’s new $12 million deal:

“One person mentioned to me that they were of the belief that had Jason Robertson come in on 12 million earlier, there was perhaps another deal that Dallas could’ve done… and they would’ve been able to keep Mavrik Bourque.”

Smoothing Things Out

Nill will have his work cut out for him as he tries to keep this lineup together while still swinging for the fences. He clearly wants to make a big splash, but that can make players uneasy walking into the rink each day. With multiple failed trades involving star players, it will be fascinating to watch how the Stars perform this season, knowing how many moving pieces are in play.

Dallas remains a legitimate contender and should once again push Colorado and Minnesota for the Central Division crown. But beyond the standings, the Stars might be one of the league’s most fascinating teams to follow. With Jim Nill constantly hunting for the next blockbuster and Jason Robertson inching toward unrestricted free agency in 2027, Dallas enters the season balancing elite talent with undeniable tension — and that combination guarantees drama.
